1. Neurogenic TOS: This
condition accounts for 95% of all TOS cases.
True neurogenic TOS: True neurogenic TOS is rare accounting
for 1% of neurogenic cases. This type of TOS is the clearly
defined type. It is caused from genetic
abnormalities in and around the thoracic outlet space. Genetic abnormalities include an extra rib in
your neck, or a fibrous band that goes from the spine in your neck to the first
rib.
Disputed neurogenic TOS: This
is the most common type of TOS. It makes
up 94% of all neurogenic cases. Some
doctors do not believe it exists, while others believe it is a common disorder. This condition is likely caused by injury to
the nerves that go from your neck down to your arm (brachial plexus).
2. Venous TOS: This type of TOS accounts for 4% of all vascular TOS cases.
Venous TOS: Venous TOS results
from compression of the subclavian vein located under your collarbone. This form of TOS affects mostly men 20 to 35
years old. It develops rather quickly,
after extended hard work of the arm and shoulder.
3. Arterial TOS: Makes up the remaining 1% of vascular TOS cases.
Arterial TOS: This form of TOS is just as rare as true neurogenic TOS. It is caused by the squeezing of the subclavian artery by the same genetic abnormalities. This artery also runs under your collarbone down to your arm.
*A person can have more than 1 type of TOS*
